Problems with Sound in Firefox on Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron)

9th of May 2008

Since upgrading to Hardy Heron I was having problems getting flash to play any sound, after mucking around for a while I found this worked :

$ sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libesd.so.0 /usr/lib/libesd.so.1
$ sudo mkdir -p /tmp/.esd/
$ sudo touch /tmp/.esd/socket

I have been a bit disappointed with the latest upgrades to Ubuntu and Firefox, they certainly have nice features, but with Ubuntu starting to lock up and Firefox crashing pretty regularly (and leaving defunct processes that need to be killed before it can be started again) they both seem to have lost a bit of the stability that was a major reason for a lot of people to switch from Windows / IE.

Hopefully since Heron is LTS, a lot of these issues will be sorted out over the next few updates. But I would like to see Ubuntu maintain the quality it has had in the previous releases without the Windows unstable early release then fix in SP1 attitude.

$ ps -ef | grep -i firefox

(Finds the defunct Firefox processes)
